Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, U.S. General Gordon Granger reached Galveston, Texas, after the Civil War and read General Order No. 3:
“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”
Annual celebrations often involve singing, so KBACH will present, Black Voices, a retrospective of choral music by black composers through the centuries.
Tune in June 19 at 7PM as Phoenix-area bass singer, Charles Newton, presents 90 minutes of works by Florence Price, William Grant Still, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Margaret Bonds, R. Nathaniel Dett, and many others.
